Here’s what we’ve learned after watching the Avalanche and Blues play three playoff games. The captain of the underdog should never come out publicly before the series and predict a victory, especially when it’s against the team with the best record in the league. Oh, and the Avalanche are really, really, really good. That’s all you need to know.
Let’s take a look at the Game 4 matchup between St. Louis and Colorado from a betting perspective in our Blues vs. Avalanche betting preview with odds, picks and predictions.
Colorado leads the series 3-0 and will be going for the sweep this afternoon in St. Louis. Game 3 set up as the game St. Louis would hang their hat on if they were going to get back into it, and Colorado busted down the door, broke the hat rack in two, and put their skates up on all the furniture while they were at it.
That kind of killer instinct is what really good teams need to win a Stanley Cup. For example, Tampa Bay didn’t have it in 2019 and was upset in the first round by Columbus. In 2020, they had it and won the Stanley Cup. Sometimes, it’s the missing ingredient for a championship team. One thing’s for sure, it’s not missing for the Avalanche.

Avalanche vs. Blues Game 4 Betting Pick (May 23, 2021)
The only way the Blues were going to hang around in this series with Colorado was to slow down the Avalanche offensively and to take advantage of some opportunities to score some themselves.
It hasn’t happened — through three games Colorado has outscored St. Louis by a 15-5 margin. While the first two games were closer than the final scores would indicate, Game 3 wasn’t, meaning this series is trending in the wrong direction for the Blues, and fast.
Sometimes teams that are down 3-0 try to play their best game in Game 4, especially if it’s on home ice so they can show some pride in front of the hometown fans. But sometimes, it doesn’t matter. This series now suddenly feels like the latter.

If you read us regularly (thank you) then you are already aware that we believe in betting with the way things are trending. For those of you joining us the first time (welcome!), when a player is streaking or a team is streaking and doing things the same way repeatedly, then we believe in riding it until it ends.
Don’t be afraid of the elimination game being the hardest to win because you know you’re going to get the best version of your opponent. Past practice is a better predictor than the rah-rah goodness of alleged tradition.
The fact is, Colorado has dominated this series with great offense, great goaltending, great defense, and there’s no reason to believe that’s going to suddenly dry up for a game. Take the spread. Take the OVER. Both have hit in three straight games. Combine them into a parlay and you get them at +225. This seems easy, no?

CLAIM OFFERBets We Like With a Blues Win
Ryan O’Reilly OVER 0.5 points (-138, FanDuel)
It should be known that we don’t like a Blues win here at all. However, O’Reilly does need to save a little face, especially after the upset prediction. O’Reilly, the 2019 Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP for the Blues, has one lone assist in this series thus far.
It’s part of the reason the Blues are down 3-0.
As captain, he needs to lead the way on the pride-o-meter and produce. Just another point is -138, but if you want to be a little more cavalier with your bankroll, you can get him to score a goal (+240, FanDuel). There’s value in O’Reilly himself, even if there isn’t for the Blues in general in this game.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome
No goals scored in the first 9:59 of the game (+118, DraftKings)
While we do like Colorado to win this game, and by at least two goals, and to score several times in the process, there has been just one goal scored in this series in the first 10 minutes of a game. Both teams seem to play well defensively early and get good goaltending to start the game. It’s not a crazy good value bet, but it’s one we think we’ll get. St. Louis will certainly try to clamp down defensively, while Colorado has been really good defensively in the first period.
