The Colorado Avalanche have not had many things go their way to start the 2024-25 season.

One of the bright spots was Ross Colton who seemed to be having the breakout season that Avs fans had been clamoring for.

Colton tallied his seventh goal of the season on Thursday night against the Utah Hockey Club. He is second in the league in goal-scoring behind Nikita Kucherov, who scored eight goals in his first seven games.

Colton is on pace to score 72 goals this season.

The Avs can’t have nice things. The 28-year-old left Thursday’s game with an apparent wrist injury in the second period.

Adrian Dater reported worries among the Avalanche organization that Colton fractured bones in his hand or fingers.

Head coach Jared Bednar did not disclose an injury update to Colton after the game on Thursday.

“He took a slash to the hand,” Bednar said on Colton after the game. “He wasn’t good enough to come back in this game but we’ll just reevaluate and tomorrow’s a day off. We’ll have a better idea on Saturday.”

This comes on the heels on an injury bug that has dealt significant blows to the Avalanche so far this season, especially the forward. The Avs started the season without three of their top forwards. Jonathan Drouin has been out for the Avalanche since the first game of the season.

If Colton’s injury requires him to sit out for significant time, this will be the Avs’ fifth forward in a projected top six that has had to miss significant time this season.
