Saturday the Broncos and 49ers will square off at Sports Authority Field at Mile High in a game that will have roster implications, but won’t matter in the record book. This will be the 37th preseason meeting between the two clubs, who have met just 14 times in meaningful (regular season or the Super Bowl) games.
Despite the limited number of times these teams have squared off, there are memorable moments – some good and some bad – for Broncos fans.
So, in anticipation of yet another matchup with the ‘Niners that means nothing except for a handful of guys on the bubble, we present the best and worst moments from meaningful Broncos-49ers games with a little help from YouTube.

In Super Bowl XXIV, Joe Montana set a then-record of five touchdown passes in a single Super Bowl. This YouTube user kindly arranged every Montana passing play from Jan. 28, 1990, including those record-setting touchdowns, into a compilation.

Every Denver Broncos fan from the 1980s claims to have thrown “the snowball” that cost the 49ers a win on Nov. 11, 1985. Frank Gifford and Joe Namath called it “unsportsmanlike and dangerous.” The ‘Niners got their revenge four years and two months later on a much bigger stage.

The lasting legacy of Denver’s trip to Wembley Stadium on Halloween 2010, might be that it marked the beginning of the end of Josh McDaniels’ time as Broncos head coach. It was there that McDaniels was eventually caught taping the 49ers walkthroughs, and where his Broncos melted down in the fourth quarter to lose 24-16. This YouTuber caught some dramatic in-stadium footage of one Broncos fan’s terrible experience through that disastrous fourth quarter.

The play was nothing pretty. The celebration was awkward. And the game was a rout. Peyton Manning and the Broncos rolled 42-17 as Manning threw his NFL record 509th career touchdown pass against the 49ers at Sports Authority Field on Oct. 19, 2014.

It was one of the darkest hours in Broncos history. Just hours after losing a stunner in overtime on New Year’s Eve, a loss that resulted in Denver missing the playoffs, Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed in a drive-by shooting in downtown Denver. But instead of game highlights, we thought it would be best to share one of the more touching tributes compiled in Williams’ honor, this one featuring music by Nelly Furtado.
