Bizarro Monday Scenario: Osweiler becomes highest-paid quarterback in NFL

Osweiler becomes highest-paid quarterback

Fasten your seat belts, people, we’re about to enter a bizarro version of the NFL free agent season; a strange and twisted episode in which Brock Osweiler, a backup quarterback who went 5-2 in seven starts, might end up making more money than the likes of Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Ben Rothlisberger.

On Monday, Danny and Cello of Morning Mayhem discussed the state of the NFL quarterback market, specifically the ways in which the scarcity of talent in the 2016 rookie class could influence teams to look Osweiler’s way.

Rumors were abound, and Danny pointed out that Osweiler’s name has been linked to the Los Angeles Rams, Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans and the New York Jets. All of these teams are looking to rebuild and are in dire need of a star quarterback.

“It would be a nice fit, theoretically, for the Rams,” Cello said. “They have a great defense and the best, maybe, running back (Todd Gurley) in the league.”

As reported in an earlier article, the Broncos are waiting for Peyton Manning’s retirement decision before moving forward on negotiations with Osweiler. The wait could cost them dearly, though, as the overheated quarterback market makes any decent player a big-ticket item.

“The Texans make a lot of sense,” Danny said. “If there’s any team that’s going to overpay, want to make a splash, it’s the Texans.”

Danny said Osweiler could potentially get a deal with the Texans for four years, worth around $70 million. The bidding war that could follow such an offer could push that number even higher.

This isn’t as far-fetched as it seems. The perfect storm of supply and demand made Ryan Tannehill of the Miami Dolphins worth $77 million over four years and this was after going 8-8 in 2014.
