The Colorado Blizzard currently sit in first place in the Major Arena Soccer League’s new second division, M2, with a perfect 5-0 record. Blizzard coach John Wells sat down with Joe Rico and Alex Ramirez of Mile High Sports to talk about the team’s success.
“After a two-game road win last weekend, a three-day turnaround this week, and then having to play another road game in a hostile environment down at the soccer house playing the Inferno, my guys were tired; they were exhausted. We decided the other night [to bring] in a few guys that hadn’t gotten a lot of playing time this year to give us fresh legs. Luis Perez, Tony Thomas and Hans Hassell came in, gave us some good minutes, and played hard,” Wells explained. “It was a tough game. We went down two goals, came back, got into the overtime segment, and Alex Moseley, being the pro that he is, he came through and won the game for us. It was pretty exciting.”
Wells doesn’t want his team to get complacent, and challenges players to always work for their spots on the field. Although Wells tends to stick to a consistent lineup, the team has a lot of talented members off of the field, and hopes that having so much talent will keep all of the players motivated to push for playing time on the field, and during training as well.
“With all the talent that we have, we get 30 guys that come out and train with us on Tuesday nights, so we pretty much get a full game in every Tuesday night after we work on some of the things we need to work on,” Wells said. “They realize that there are guys out there every night at training that could take their spot… my guys realize there are guys that are out training that could take [their] spot any time, so if they don’t bring it at practice, and continue bringing it in the games, they could find themselves watching the live feeds.”
The Blizzard are hoping to keep their winning streak alive during their last four games of the season. Their next game will be against the San Diego Sockers at the Denver Coliseum on Feb. 3.
