After a rough start on offense – fumbling on their second snap, leading to a Steelers touchdown – the Broncos found paydirt twice in less than two minutes on their next two drives. Denver would add two more touchdowns and the Broncos lead 27-13 going into the locker room at halftime.
Needing just a win to clinch a playoff berth for the fifth year in a row, Denver is just 30 minutes of football away from accomplishing that task.
Brock Osweiler ended the first quarter with a perfect QB rating and hit both Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders for touchdowns to give the Broncos a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.
And the Denver defense was incredibly stout for several drives throughout the first quarter to set up a third touchdown drive that crossed over to the second quarter. Denver looked like it was going to stall out again in the red zone, a problem that plagued them last week, but Brock Osweiler took matters into his own hands and ran in from seven yards out put Denver up 20-7 (after a missed PAT).
Denver conceded a field goal on the Steelers’ ensuing drive, despite some big catches by Antonio Brown, who looked like he was finally starting to figure out Chris Harris.
Osweiler was huge on third down throughout the half, completing all eight of eight third downs, including the touchdown run and a touchdown pass.
The Denver defense was firing on all cylinders in the first half, putting up a total of 295 yards (207 through the air) and scoring four touchdowns. That total matched their output in four-quaters plus against New England, their previous high on the year.
Demaryius Thomas responded from a tough game against Oakland to have four catches for 52 yards with two touchdowns. But it was Emmanuel Sanders who accounted for the big gashes against his former team. In on half, Sanders accounted for 139 receiving yards and 24 rush yards.
As the Broncos learned last week, they have to come to play for a full 60 minutes.
There was some cause for concern at the end of the half, though, as Osweiler went to the locker room for treatment on his shoulder. Trevor Simian took the final kneel down snap to end the half. Osweiler was announced as probable to return for the second half.
As usual, the team from Mile High Sports was offering perspective and analysis, along with the greater-Denver media, on the events that transpired.
Afternoon Drive host Eric Goodman may have just summed up the first half perfectly…
Only the 1st half, but #Broncos have gone on the road and punched the hottest team in NFL in the throat… Who feels better about this team?
— Eric Goodman (@EricGoodman) December 20, 2015
But it wasn’t all roses for the Broncos. It was a simple game plan, most people thought…
Can the #Broncos run the football? They're gonna need to if they want to win this game.
— Arran Andersen (@arranandersen) December 20, 2015
But on the Broncos’ second play from scrimmage…
Seconds offensive play and Ronnie Hillman fumbles. He was known for doing that in the past.
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 20, 2015
And two plays later Pittsburgh was in the end zone…
Two plays later, DeAngelo Williams runs for the touchdown. Towels twirling.

Although it was a confluence of events that led to the early deficit…

Brock responds to the bad first drive with a statement…
Osweiler with the short term memory. Great throws and the #Broncos are in the red zone
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 20, 2015
Lots of analysts were calling for the #Broncos to go pass heavy. Doing it on this drive.
— JGoRadio 🇺🇦 (@JGoRadio) December 20, 2015
TOUCHDOWN — Great job by Osweiler to find DT for the 18-yard strike. Overcame some hiccups on the series. 12 plays, 85 yards on the drive.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 20, 2015
That's a tremendous drive, almost all Osweiler. Very encouraging! #Broncos
— James Merilatt (@jamesmerilatt) December 20, 2015
The Denver defense rewarded the offense with a huge three-and-out capped by a sack…
Malik Jackson and Derek Wolfe just had a Roethlisberger sacklunch! #Broncos D forces a 3 and out.
— Arran Andersen (@arranandersen) December 20, 2015
And in the blink of an eye, Denver was up 14-7 when Osweiler connected with Emmanuel Sanders…
Brock Osweiler to Emmanuel Sanders for a 61 yard touchdown. One play on that drive. #Broncos 14 #Steelers 7
— Raul Martinez (@RaulNBCBoston) December 20, 2015
Denver evened the turnover count when Bradley Roby tipped a pass to Josh Bush…
Josh Bush right place tight time for an Interception. #Broncos D does it again. Brock and Co will start at the 50.
— Arran Andersen (@arranandersen) December 20, 2015
Brock ended the first quarter with a perfect quarterback rating…
Brock Osweiler's QB rating in the first quarter was 158.3.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 20, 2015
And to start the second quarter, when the running backs couldn’t find the end zone, Osweiler took it himself…
GREAT decision by Osweiler to take off for the run — TD … makes up for the 2nd-down debacle. Nearly fell as he crossed the goal line
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 20, 2015
It wasn't graceful, but Brock finds paydirt. #Broncos have scored 21 unanswered
— Arran Andersen (@arranandersen) December 20, 2015
Pittsburgh had to take to the air to try and get back in the game, but the No Fly Zone limited the Steelers’ high flying offense to a field goal…
#NoFlyZone. I think the #Steelers threw on nearly every play of that drive. #Broncos held them to a field goal, hold 20-10 lead.
— MileHighReport (@MileHighReport) December 20, 2015
One of the real keys to the first half was Denver’s efficiency on third down…
THIS. IS. NUTS! Broncos now 8-for-8 on 3rd down conversions. Brock is 6-for-6 on 3rd downs. with 2 TD's. #DENvsPIT
— Lionel Bienvenu (@lionelbienvenu) December 20, 2015
Which was a big product of Pittsburgh’s blitz strategy…
Steelers have been terrible with the zone blitz. LBs don't seem to have any idea what to do. Middle of field wide open.
— Les Shapiro (@LesShapiro) December 20, 2015
The Broncos offense was firing on all cylinders, getting a fourth touchdown of the half…
TOUCHDOWN — Osweiler to DT, who gets in there with a nice stiff-arm. 6 yards on the TD. 80 yards in 10 plays on the drive.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 20, 2015
Denver’s D bent but didn’t break again, holding Pittsburgh to a field goal…
Boswell kick is good. 27-13 Broncos. :04 left in the half. #DENvsPIT
— cover32 Broncos (@cover32_DEN) December 20, 2015
But there was some cause for concern at the end of the half…
Brock Osweiler jogging to the locker room with a left shoulder injury. Probable to return, but still … yikes.
— Andrew Mason (@MaseDenver) December 20, 2015
Stay tuned Broncos fans, this one could be interesting if Osweiler can’t return.
