Carlos Gonzalez talks playing the Cubs, his struggles at the plate

With a record of 20-12 entering Monday’s action, the Colorado Rockies are hot. With a batting average of .192, Carlos Gonzalez‘s bat is not. That being said, the veteran slugger is in good spirits. He joined Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro during Afternoon Drive on Mile High Sports Radio.

“We’re winning games,” Gonzalez said. “That makes me happy.”

As content as Gonzalez is with the team’s performance, he is still working on righting his struggles at the plate. The 31-year-old, who is a career .289 hitter, is confident that the hits will come.

“I’m still working hard,” he said. “There’s 162 games and the good thing about it is we’re winning ballgames without my bat and a guy like Trevor Story’s…It doesn’t matter if [it’s] going bad right now, I know that at some point I’m going to get big hits for this team. That’s my mentality right now: just try to stay focused, continue to work and I will hit.”

The next test for the Rockies will be the defending World Series Champion Chicago Cubs. Gonzalez admits, that there’s a little excitement when the Cubbies are in the Mile High City.

“I feel like there’s a lot of energy whenever they come in town,” he said. “It’s a good thing for a player whenever you have the Cubs in town. We expect a lot of fans, it gives you a lot extra. Hopefully we can play the same way we played last year. Every time they come in town, we play good baseball, because there’s a lot of energy.”
