The Denver Nuggets did not make any major moves before the NBA trade deadline and according to team insider Chris Dempsey, the decision to stay put was not surprising.
As Dempsey explained on the Afternoon Drive with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro, the Nuggets are currently sitting in second place in the western conference and that is after suffering a variety of injuries this season. With Isaiah Thomas still set to return shortly, it just makes more sense for Denver to ride out this season with the current roster and then make adjustments in the offseason.
“It was never really even on my radar this year with the way the Nuggets have been playing with this configuration of players,” Dempsey said.
Dempsey explained that while it may have seemed sexy to make a splash move before the deadline, the Nuggets really only need to improve defensively, so breaking up the roster for a move that does not do a whole lot to improve the team does not make sense. With the All-Star break coming up, the Nuggets will have an opportunity to get healthy, and then the front office can reevaluate things this summer after watching how the rest of the season unfolds.
“Because they have played themselves into a situation where they’ve been in first or second in the west for majority of the pre-all-star break part of the season, it buys them time,” Dempsey said.
