The Denver Broncos have themselves a new defensive tackle in Clinton McDonald — signing a two-year deal earlier Wednesday — who will provide depth to the defensive line as an addition next to Derek Wolfe and Domata Peko.
But is he more of a player than just depth?
McDonald has played 97 games in his career, with 45 games being in his four-year stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In 2017, McDonald brought in five sacks, even after only starting three of those games.
In an interview with Les Shapiro and Ronnie Kohrt of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7, Trevor Sikkema of the Pewder Report discusses the impact that McDonald made on the Buccaneers and what he will bring to Denver.
“He was thought of as the ‘low-key signing’ he wasn’t the big headline guy that they were bringing in, he ended up being the best value that they had in that entire free agency period and Clinton McDonald can still be that guy,” Sikkema said.
“This is a guy who has a good amount of versatility. He plays that nose-tackle role, he played that role next to Gerald McCoy, a bit of a run-stuffer, guy who picks up a lot of blocks,” Sikkema said. “He’s a hard worker. He does the dirty work, you absolutely need players like that especially on the defensive interior.”
Sikkema goes on to say that while McDonald won’t gobble up the sacks and tally major statistical numbers, it’s the little things he does that make others around him better players.
“Clinton McDonald, I would say, is more of a pressure guy than a sack guy; I think that’s just the natural role he’s in,” Sikkema said. “Those are the kind of players, the staple players, sometimes they won’t get the sacks, but the pressures and the ‘doing your job’ is such a big deal. I know guys like Von Miller are appreciative of players who truly do the dirty work in the middle, so they can get those one-on-ones and they can really shine on the edges.”
