The Denver Broncos drafted two safeties in the offseason, and with Darian Stewart set to hit the market this year, the thought was that they were being brought in and developed to become his eventual replacement.
Well, plans have changed.
Stewart has played so well this season that the Broncos couldn’t afford to lose him, and they signed him to a four-year $28 million extension ($17.5 million guaranteed) just over a week ago.
With an average salary of $7 million, he will become the 11th highest paid safety in the NFL, just behind Kam Chancellor and a huge upgrade from the $2 million a year he was making under his previous contract.
On Friday, he celebrated with his secondary brethren, the No Fly Zone.
With Stewart, the Broncos have the best secondary in the NFL, and that shouldn’t change any time soon.
