The Denver Broncos are excited about the future of offensive coordinator Davis Webb, and our first press conference with him showcased why Sean Payton believes in him.

Denver Broncos OC Davis Webb finding rhythm as new playcaller

All eyes are on Davis Webb this upcoming season after Sean Payton handed him the keys to the playcalling car and promoted him to offensive coordinator.

Webb met with the media for the first time since taking over playcalling duties, where he’ll work side by side with Payton to help turn the Broncos offense into one of the league’s best units.

Payton is one of the best play designers in the game, and he sees things that not many people do, and he sees things before they happen. Now, combine his innovation with a young offensive mind like Webb, and the possibilities could be endless.

Webb is fully hands-on in his approach as a coach, and he spends ample time in every position group’s meeting rooms with those position groups’ respective coaches.

The coaching language is the same in every room. That helps ensure that everybody is on the same page.

In Thursday’s final OTA practice, Webb and the offense were hyped after a successful play design caught the Broncos defense off guard, leading to a first down. Webb fist pumped the air as players celebrated.

He’s getting more comfortable and he has one of the biggest resources at his disposal with Payton standing by his side. Payton is arguably the biggest reason Webb stayed in Denver, and he was chomping at the bit to come back.

“I would say there’s two things about that. No. 1, that was one reason why I wanted to be here was with [Head Coach] Sean [Payton] here,” Webb said. “I trust him; he trusts me. We think very similar. I know how he wants the game to be played. It’s the same offense for the most part, just little tweaks here and there, but this is a Sean Payton-coached football team, a Sean Payton offensive philosophy, and we’re just going to grow with our QB, and our skill players and our offensive line. We have one of the best guards in football. We have Luke Wattenberg, the smartest center I’ve been around. We have a left tackle that can pass pro[tect]. We have a right tackle that can do it all. So this is a fun of offense to be a part of. The most attractive thing was leaning on Sean, being in game plan meetings with him, using his experience. I think that’s going to benefit a young play caller. I’m not dumb. I know this is a lot. However, having him there and having the relationship with the staff members. I love our staff, and we’ve been together for three years.”

One of the biggest goals of the offseason for this Broncos team that fell one game shy of the Super Bowl was going out and adding a legitimate playmaker that could open things up for the offense. Denver did just that by trading for Jaylen Waddle.

Webb shared a personal story about his time in Buffalo, where the Bills landed Josh Allen a legitimate playmaker in Stefon Diggs, and that helped open things up for him.

“He’s good,” Webb said of Waddle. “He’s a really good player. There are some similarities. When I was with [Bills QB] Josh Allen going into Year 3, similar to [QB] Bo [Nix] going into Year 3, and we traded for [Patriots WR] Stefon Diggs, and that was a good year. That was a good two year run in ’20 and ’21 when I was together with them. Just seeing the growth from both players that time, there’s some similarities of what started to happen here. It doesn’t mean it’s going to, we got a long way to go, but man, he’s good. I’ve just enjoyed the person and just watching him work. He is a blessing to be around. He’s a multiplier. He’s a thermostat. Very, very good. That’s a credit to [General Manager] George [Paton]. That’s a credit to [Head Coach] Sean [Payton]. We don’t bring in bad people here. We have really good players, and we have great team chemistry.”

Even if it’s a Sean Payton offensive philosophy, Webb has the autonomy to add some of his own wrinkles into the mix and we’re all excited to see what that looks like in the regular season.
