The Denver Broncos offense struggled mightily throughout three quarters of play in Sunday’s win against the Indianapolis Colts. How did rookie quarterback Bo Nix shake off a rough performance with the help of Denver’s special teams and defensive units?

Denver Broncos Film Room: Bo Nix bounces back from rough game

In our latest Denver Broncos film room installment for Mile High Sports YouTube page, I sat down and looked at the Broncos offensive film against the Colts on Sunday.

Turnovers, penalties, and a lack of a run game hurt the Broncos offense and Bo Nix in Sunday’s win against the Colts. What’s odd about how Sunday played out was that the Broncos offense struggled to amass 200 yards of offense and still found a way to win and score three touchdowns.

Denver finished the game with 193 net yards of offense. Nix threw for 130 yards and three touchdowns in the air, with three interceptions, and he also led the Broncos offense in rushing with eight carries for 23 yards.

You do the math there. Nix accounted for 153 of Denver’s 193 yards on Sunday, which is a large reason why the offense struggled. The Broncos couldn’t run the football against a 31st-ranked Colts rushing defense, and because of that, Nix threw the ball quite a bit.

The Colts defense played a lot of zone coverage and played Denver’s passing game really well. At times, they bracket-covered Courtland Sutton with a cornerback playing outside leverage and a safety playing inside and over the top.

If Sutton aligned in the slot, they’d re-route him with a jam from an inside linebacker and would play over-the-top coverage from the safety and underneath coverage from a corner. They did a good job of disguising certain looks, and Nix was late to deliver the football on time on several occasions, which led to picks.

The good news, however, is that Nix shook off the three picks and fired back with two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, which put him at three touchdowns and three picks on the day.
