The Denver Broncos are back in the headlines for player honors after veteran kicker Wil Lutz took home the NFL’s AFC Special Teams Player of the Week award after his performance in Sunday’s win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wil Lutz has been a bright spot for the Denver Broncos this season, and he came up big in Sunday’s 26-7 win on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While much of the conversation following Denver’s win has been surrounding their defense and Bo Nix’s performance, Lutz helped the Broncos consistently extend their lead.

He was 4-for-4 on his field goal attempts and made both of his extra point attempts on Sunday, helping account for 14 of Denver’s 26 points. Specifically he was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts between 30-39 yards, and 2-for-2 on his attempts from 40-49 yards.

His effort on Sunday led to him taking home the AFC’s Special Teams Player of the Week honors, as the team announced on Wednesday morning.

After re-signing with the Broncos during NFL free agency, Lutz has had a great start to his season, making all nine of his field goal attempts through the first three games of the regular season and all three point after tries.

This is the second time Lutz has taken home the award as a member of the Broncos. He also took home the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month last year in November.

From Denver’s press release:

Lutz joins former Broncos kicker Brandon McManus (2020, ’21) as well as kickers Matt Prater (2008, ’09, ’11, ’12, ’13) and Jason Elam (1998, ’99, 2003, ’04, ’07, ’08, ’09) as the only Broncos players at that position to garner the distinction. He also becomes the 20th different Bronco to earn the award since its inception in 1993.

Lutz is off to a better start this season for Denver than he was through the first three weeks of 2023 and has been a consistent producer of points for the team. Will he have another one in him vs. the New York Jets?
