Denver Broncos executive Mark Thewes departs for Raiders job

The tides of change keep occurring for the Denver Broncos as they’ll have to add new faces to their front office and coaching staff. On Tuesday, the Broncos lose Mark Thewes to their AFC West rival, the Las Vegas Raiders.

Thewes had been a member of the Broncos organization dating back to 2009 when he joined Josh McDaniels here in the Mile High City. When McDaniels was fired, Thewes remained intact after the organization made wide sweeping changes. He was the Broncos Vice President of Football Operations and Compliance.

Thewes was the Broncos direct line of communication to the NFL league office, serving as the liaison to the NFL office to ensure the club’s compliance with the collective bargaining agreement, roster management and reporting, scheduling, officiating and discipline. In addition to overseeing the team’s football analytics/game management and football information systems departments, he works closely with club finance on overall football budgeting and expense monitoring, according to his media biography.

He now joins the Raiders as their Senior Vice President of Football Operations, where he reunites with newly appointed Raiders’ GM John Spytek, who was in Denver when Thewes was here back in 2013-2015. One of the Broncos biggest front office assets now transitions to being one of the biggest assets to their biggest rival as they look to compete in a division that is now manned by Sean Payton, Andy Reid, Jim Harbaugh, and Pete Carroll — a group of coaches who easily elevate the team’s they lead.

This is a big loss behind the scenes for the Broncos front office.
