The Denver Broncos are going to be looking for a new passing game coordinator after John Morton accepted a deal to be the new offensive coordinator for Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions. Who are some options internally the Broncos could look at?

Johnny Mo, as some players call him, has done a great job helping the Broncos passing game evolve here, aligning with Sean Payton’s vision. Morton, a veteran coach who has 22 years of coaching experience is now heading back to the Detroit Lions to be Dan Campbell’s offensive coordinator.

Morton replaces Ben Johnson who took the Chicago Bears head coaching job, who also poached Broncos tight end coach Declan Doyle from Payton’s staff to be the offensive coordinator in Chicago. Now, Morton also leaves.

This means that the Broncos will have a new passing game coordinator this upcoming season who will help oversee the offensive operations for second-year quarterback Bo Nix and the receivers. Davis Webb, the Broncos’ current quarterbacks coach, could end up seeing a promotion to this role or could have a simultaneous role as QB coach and passing game coordinator, which would continue to elevate his stock.

Another name to watch for would be Pete Carmichael, who spent most of his career with Payton in New Orleans. Also, Logan Kilgore, one of the Broncos’ offensive assistants could also see some movement internally.

I’d estimate that Payton will move quickly to promote if he decides to go the in-house route or if he slowly evaluates who is available outside the team. It’s also possible that the Broncos end up losing several more assistant coaches as some of the newly appointed head coaches around the league look to build their staffs.
