There has been much speculation over whom the next Broncos’ quarterback should be and rightfully so. Fans have been quick to point out that they want a quarterback with a solid skill set — for example, Colin Kaepernick. And there is nothing wrong with the next Denver quarterback having the skills that a Kaepernick possesses. However, fans should look for the next signal caller in Denver to have great leadership abilities, more than anything else.
The Broncos defense is clearly built to win now, even with the losses of Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan. Therefore, Denver should focus on getting a quarterback that can hold the offense together and be looked upon for leadership.
Fans can criticize Denver’s offense from a season ago all that they want, but one piece that cannot be criticized is the leadership that both Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler brought to the team. Both had a steadiness that was respected on the field and throughout the locker room. Unfortunately, both are no longer on the Broncos’ roster.
So how important is having a true leader at quarterback?
“Right now I think we have Mark Sanchez signed and, um, he … he has some experience in this league” T.J. Ward said laughing to the NFL Network.
I’m sure Ward meant no disrespect to Sanchez, but it is clear that the new Broncos’ quarterback is not looked upon like Manning or Osweiler was a season ago.
Leadership is earned by what has been accomplished on the field and what has been said in the locker room. As it stands right now, Sanchez really hasn’t done those things to become a leader in his career.
It is clear that the Broncos are not done searching for options at quarterback. When it comes to the choices out there, leadership qualities are pretty slim. Kaepernick has clearly not been the leader the San Francisco 49ers have been looking for. Ryan Fitzpatrick and Brian Hoyer have been journeymen in the league. Robert Griffin III was not what the Washington Redskins envisioned, and it takes time for a draft pick to develop leadership and earn respect.
Whomever the Broncos decide to pick up or draft, leadership abilities simply cannot be taken lightly. Denver will not repeat if their quarterback does not put out leadership qualities that are respected throughout the locker room.
The Broncos may be able to get to the playoffs with a flashy arm. However, only a leader at quarterback, matched with a dominate defense, will allow them to win in the postseason.
