Nik Bonitto teamed up with Safeway and the Food Bank of the Rockies to tackle hunger and keep kids in the game in a community effort to help fight childhood hunger and support local children as they prepare to return to school.
Bonitto and several local student-athletes participated in a Safeway Grocery Combine, which was a football-inspired competition featuring several grocery-themed challenges that showcase the importance of keeping kids fueled and ready for school.
Bonitto and athletes competed in various grocery bagging challenges to see who could bag groceries the fastest (Speed Pack Totes of Hope), guessing the weight of the grocery bags (Feel The Fuel), and a cereal box stacking contest (Build For Hunger Relief) to see who could stack the most cereal boxes the highest.
This was the launch of the “Team Up to Tackle Hunger” fundraising campaign benefiting hunger relief programs serving children and families throughout the state and region.
Campaign proceeds raised at Safeway and Albertsons stores in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska through August 11 will support local food banks and programs that provide nutritious meals for children during the summer and on weekends throughout the school year.
“The Food Bank of the Rockies has always been good to me, helping me with my events,” Bonitto said. “Just being able to partner with them again, along with Safeway. They’ve been really great, and today was a great event.”
With training camp kicking off on Tuesday, Bonitto shared his excitement for getting back on the field for this upcoming season after how last season ended, with Denver falling one game shy of the Super Bowl in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots.
“I’m really excited, especially with how the season ended,” Bonitto said. “I know everybody is chomping at the bit to get the pads back on and be able to compete for the next couple of months.”
Veterans officially report Tuesday for the first day of training camp.
