The Denver Broncos running back room already features a variety of questions going into training camp, and now one of their next potential undrafted gems is headed to the non-football injury list.
Denver Broncos rookie RB Blake Watson lands on non-football injury list
Earlier this week, the Denver Broncos rookies and quarterbacks reported to the team facility for the start of training camp. Two of those rookies include running backs Blake Watson and Audric Estime.
Per the NFL’s transaction wire, the Broncos placed Watson on the non-football injury list on Wednesday, and it’s currently unclear what the injury is or what a potential timeline for return may be. However, Watson can come off of the list at any point during camp.
This designation means that Watson suffered an injury away from the team facility. With camp fully slated to start beginning next week, it will be interesting to monitor how Watson’s absence will impact the competition that’s occurring inside of the running back room.
Fellow rookie rusher Estime underwent a knee scope procedure during OTAs, and head coach Sean Payton mentioned that the team expects him to be ready for the start of camp. That leaves the running back room with Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin, Samaje Perine, and Tyler Badie as the other backs on the roster who are going to be ready for the first day of camp.
Denver agreed to terms initially with Watson as an undrafted rookie free agent coming out of Memphis, where he projects to be a hybrid rusher and receiver out of the backfield — with the potential to step into Payton’s ‘Joker’ role.
Before camp begins, Payton and general manager George Paton are expected to meet with the media during the team’s annual Media BBQ — with Watson’s status more than likely set to be addressed.
