Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix has maintained a firm level of confidence this season while still navigating the highs and lows of playing the game. After a shaky 0-2 start at the beginning of the season, Nix’s confidence hasn’t waivered, and it’s shown up in the team’s three-game win streak.

In today’s NFL, it’s hard for rookie quarterbacks to build confidence with the constant pressure of trying to play at a high level with all of the noise of local and national media, impatience from fanbases, and battling the expectations of having to be Patrick Mahomes from day one.

None of these narratives seem to concern or cross the mind of Denver Broncos rookie quarterback Bo Nix. Various Broncos teammates have told Mile High Sports that Nix is very even-keeled and competitive and that not much phases him, even in chaos.

When you watch the film, you see a QB who doesn’t necessarily get rattled from a nerves standpoint. After the team’s 0-2 start, and Nix having four interceptions and no touchdowns, he’s kept battling on. Raiders’ pass rusher Maxx Crosby tried his hand at it this past week, but it didn’t work.

“Ironically I didn’t really even hear it when it happened in the game,” Nix said. “I’ve been sent [it] a lot and seeing the video after. I think that’s just part of his game. I think he’s mastered that and he’s used it to his success. I think it’s important when things like that happen, you just kind of come down, get back to the basics and not necessarily listen to it. Kind of cut out the noise and just go to work. At the time, we weren’t doing a whole lot offensively, so it was good that we turned it around in the second half.”

On Wednesday, Nix touched on how the next step for him is to build consistency on a week-to-week basis as part of his ongoing development.

“That’s a great question,” Nix said. “I think consistency is the key. I’ve been able to make strides just in five weeks, but [I] have to continue to find those areas of improvement each game. You’re always going to look back and want a few back. [You are going to] make some mistakes in games and wish you could do it different. That’s why you play again and again. Just being consistent is the main thing, and continuing to not turn the ball over and put your team in a good spot.”

In two of Denver’s three straight wins, Nix avoided being sacked against Tampa Bay and New York, but was sacked three times in Sunday’s win vs. the Raiders. He’s been decisive with the football and more importantly hasn’t put it into harms way, while still getting a feel for what he can and can’t do at the NFL level. It’s not just QB play, but the play of the entire offense that will be key for sustaining success going forward.

“We’re running the ball better and we’re playing better team football,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said. “We keep talking about all of us—[including] the coaches—of providing the perfect pictures and continuing to do that. He’s getting experience. You see it and it’s happening.”

The Broncos will host the Chargers on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. MT on CBS.
