The Denver Broncos and head coach Sean Payton have stolen a wide receiver from the New Orleans Saints practice squad. This move comes ironically a week and a half before Denver travels to New Orleans next week for Thursday Night Football. What type of receiver is Denver getting?

Sean Payton loves wide receivers. As a matter of fact, he loves wide receivers who possess certain traits like height and athleticism. Denver signed A.T. Perry from the New Orleans Saints practice squad on Tuesday, as first reported by Nick Underhill of New Orleans Football Network. Perry is 6-foot-5, 205 pounds, and could be an under-the-radar addition for Denver if they have a vision for him amidst their current receiver depth that features Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Josh Reynolds, Troy Franklin, Devaughn Vele, and Lil’Jordan Humphrey on the active roster.

On the practice squad, they now have Perry, Michael Bandy, David Sills V, and Kaden Davis.

Perry had a pivotal but under-the-radar type of role in New Orleans in 2023, appearing in 10 games and starting in three of them last year. In his 10-game stretch for the Saints, he hauled in 12 catches on 18 targets for 246 yards and four touchdowns. Ten of his 12 catches in 2023 moved the chains for a first down.

This is a low-risk, high-reward type of move. I reached out to somebody who covers the Saints and here’s what they told me about what Perry does well and brings to the table.

“A.T. is a really talented player that works incredibly hard. They didn’t have a role for him in the new offense here in New Orleans, which relies on a different playing style. He’s a talented jump ball receiver with deceptive speed. I’d expect he can play a Tim Patrick-like role but definitely shouldn’t be limited to one type of pass-catcher archetype.”

We’ll get our first look at him this week as the Broncos practice on Wednesday.
