With all the talk about Peyton Manning’s play in a new offensive scheme, one storyline that might have been overlooked during Saturday’s preseason tilt with Houston was the quality of the Texans defense, which Benjamin Allbright of The Big Show on Mile High Sports AM 1340 says could be one of the few defenses in the league that is better than the Denver Broncos’. Still, his cohosts think the Broncos could have the top “D” in the league.
With J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney out of the lineup, along with recent acquisition Vince Wilfork, the Texans defense held up well against Manning and most of the Denver offense (the Broncos rested Emmanuel Sanders), allowing just one touchdown, a 57-yard pass from backup Brock Osweiler before giving way to the third-teamers and beyond.
Speaking on The Big Show on Monday, Allbright says he thinks Houston, or perhaps Buffalo, might be the only teams that can challenge Denver for the title of best defense in the league in 2015. Against Houston, Denver did not allow an offensive touchdown and twice held the Texans out of the end zone in red zone situations.
Kent Erickson says that a strong pass rush is key to defensive dominance, something the Broncos, Texans and Bills all bring in force. But wonders if Denver is still one player away from being the best in the league.
