On Tuesday, Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak made it clear what he’s looking for in the Broncos next starting quarterback:
“What we’re trying to find is that consistent guy.”
Consistency is something that might be difficult to come by with only Trevor Siemian, last year’s third string quarterback, returning to the team following Peyton Manning‘s retirement and Brock Osweiler‘s departure via free agency.
Recently Kubiak hinted that the battle for the starting job was primarily between Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian, mainly because they have shown that they can be more consistent than rookie Paxton Lynch.
“He (Lynch) does a lot of great things [but] he has his troubles,” Kubiak said. “We’re trying to find that consistency anywhere, but as a group they are battling their tails off.”
And Lynch agrees.
“I need to be more consistent,” Lynch said. “I come out here, and I have some great days, and then I come out here and have some not so great days, but I think that I obviously need to be more consistent.”
The Broncos haven’t had a ton of down time since winning Super Bowl 50 in February, but with OTAs wrapping up at the end of the week, they will get a little over a month off to get recharged before training camp begins.
Unfortunately for the quarterbacks, that means less time to settle into the rhythm they’ve established in OTAs thus far.
“I’m a repetition guy,” Sanchez said. “Whether I’m on a plane or sitting in a hotel or on a beach somewhere, I’ll have my stuff near me and constantly just go over it every chance I get.”
Despite the fact that Sanchez, Siemian and Lynch are locked in a position battle, they sure aren’t calling it that.
“I don’t look at it too much like that,” Siemian said. “I’ve kind of got some of my own things to focus on. Just helping each other out and competing.”
