Former Denver Broncos tight end and two-time Super Bowl champion Byron Chamberlain joined Sean Walsh on Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 to discuss the Broncos’ offense and the potential moves they could make in free agency.
“Poor quarterback play definitely hurt the Broncos this year. I don’t think you blame that on coaching; I just think we need to upgrade that position,” Chamberlain said, assessing the limitations of Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler and Paxton Lynch. “The focus needs to be getting a signal-caller in there; a veteran guy I think that has some experience… I think, if we could somehow lure Kirk Cousins to Denver; somehow get him in the fold there, I think that would be a great move.”
“I do believe that a guy like Kirk Cousins — a veteran guy — is maybe the missing piece for that Broncos organization to get them back in the playoffs and back contending
for Super Bowls.”
As a former NFL tight end himself, Chamberlain has high hopes for Jake Butt, the Broncos’ fifth-round pick in the 2017 draft. “I have watched Jake Butt when he was in college at Michigan, and he is a guy that I think can help the Broncos. I think that is one of the positions that, for a little while, we have kind of been missing. Hopefully, he is that guy. Hopefully, he comes back and gets healthy during this offseason and this summer; he can be a guy that can step in and really contribute to that offense.”
Diversifying the passing offense is important, and Chamberlain noted that. “It just seems like that the pressure is put too much on our wide receivers — on Emmanuel Sanders and [Demaryius Thomas] — and you need guys like a tight end to take that pressure off those guys.”
