You might not know it by what you’ve read (especially if it was on Twitter during last Sunday’s win at Detroit), but Denver Broncos wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is on pace for his highest career total in receptions, which would also be a Broncos team record.
With 24 catches through three games, Thomas is on pace for 124 on the year, which would easily break Rod Smith’s 113-reception single season record of 113 in 2001.
Still, Thomas (and his critics) know the offense isn’t clicking the way they would like. On Wednesday, Thomas met with the media at UC Health Training Center and spoke on the state of the offense and it’s development under a new head coach and offensive coordinator.
“It’ll take time,” he said.
If Thomas isn’t satisfied with a record-setting pace and a 3-0 start, Broncos fans have plenty to look forward to as the season unfolds.
Here are some of the highlights from his media scrum:
Thomas: “I think [Detroit] was one of my best games so far, especially making plays. I had a couple drops, but I think it’s one of the best ones that I’ve had.”
Thomas: “…I’d be fine with being an underdog every week as long as we come out with the win. It’ll take time with this offense because of new players and a whole new starting line. I think it will get better every week here and from here on out. As long as we’re winning, it really doesn’t matter.”
Thomas: “I’m not going to say that you all have been too hard on [Peyton Manning], but there are some people out there that are being too hard. I hear it all of the time and I see it, but I never say anything. If he didn’t have it, he wouldn’t be playing right now.”
Thomas: “I think that a lot of people are pointing at Peyton because he’s Peyton and what he’s done in his career. They want him to do better, but as long as we win we don’t really care how we do it.”
And if the offense starts to take on more of its characteristics from Manning’s first three years, they’ll be doing it very often.
