Success generally comes as part of progression. Like a baby trying to walk; first it crawls, then it attempts to stand — before finally taking its first steps.
That progression is exactly what the Colorado Rockies are in the middle of, minus the baby talk. Colorado isn’t just looking to take its first steps this year, they’re looking to run — make a run, that is — deep into the postseason.
Soft-spoken second baseman D.J. LeMahieu helps lock down one of the best defenses in baseball. With a .987 fielding percentage, the Rockies finished second overall in the majors last season, providing piece of mind for pitchers — who know that when they take the mound, their defense can be counted on to get the job done.
In an interview with Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 from the Rockies’ clubhouse at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, LeMahieu thinks the Rockies will be even better in 2017.
“Last year, we had a confidence, but we had a lot of question marks. This year, I think we know how good we can be this year, and I think our sights are set extremely high this year,” LeMahieu said.
The Rockies sprayed the champagne last year after clinching their first wild-card berth since 2009, but LeMahieu says the Rockies are thirsty for more.
“I think we want to celebrate more than once this postseason,” LeMahieu said. “It’s extremely hard to do that, and we need to focus from the very first game and we just need to keep grinding and keep winning, and hopefully, we can celebrate more than once.”
“I just think this year, we have our sights set high and we’re looking to do a lot of damage this year.”
