The Colorado Rockies bullpen was good on Monday. The Seattle Mariners’ was just a little bit better. Six different Seattle relievers combined to keep Colorado at arm’s length over four innings to earn a 6-5 win in the first of four straight games against the Rockies.
Tyler Chatwood struggled with command over 4.1 innings for the Rockies, while rookie Sam Gaviglio surrendered five runs over five-plus innings to earn his first big league win. Chatwood allowed all six Mariners runs in the game, five while he was on the mound. Gaviglio had to turn things over to the bullpen in the sixth after allowing back-to-back singles to DJ LeMahieu and Nolan Arenado. Those two would come around to score to bring Colorado within one, but that was as close as they would get.
Bud Black used Scott Oberg, Jordan Lyles, Adam Ottavino and Jake McGee to keep Colorado in it. Lyles went two hitless innings and McGee worked out of a jam Ottavino created in the eighth, then a scoreless ninth. Scott Servais called on more than half his ‘pen, but it paid off. Five different Mariners earned holds, and Edwin Diaz pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save.
Gerardo Parra had another big day at the plate for Colorado, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs. Trevor Story homered in the fifth inning, but both he and Parra struck out in the ninth.
Colorado remains in first place in the National League West by only a half game over the Dodgers, who beat St. Louis on Sunday. Colorado and Seattle will play one more game at Coors Field on Tuesday before they travel to Seattle for a pair. Ariel Miranda (4-2, 4.22 ERA) is scheduled to start for Seattle. Tyler Anderson (3-4, 5.40) will go for Colorado. It’s an early first pitch, scheduled for 5:10 p.m. MDT.
