Although the Colorado Avalanche haven’t attained much postseason success (two playoff appearances, two first-round exits) during Matt Duchene’s career, the forward continues to find ways to add to his impressive collection of championship hardware elsewhere.
On Sunday, thanks in large part to Duchene’s performance, Canada defeated Finland 2-0 to capture its second straight World Championship gold medal. Connor McDavid buried a rebound off of a Duchene shot for the first tally; while Duchene added an empty-netter in the final second to seal the victory.
An alternate captain for Canada, Duchene finished the tournament with 10 points in 10 games. In addition to the two gold medals he has won at the Worlds, he has also picked up a gold at the Olympics, the U18 World Juniors, the U17 World Juniors and a Spengler Cup Championship, all whilst representing Canada.
Calvin Pickard also picked up a gold medal for Canada. The backup goaltender, he finished the tournament with a record of 2-0, a goals against average of 0.50 and a save percentage of .971.
Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen picked up a silver medal in Finland’s losing effort. In five games, he contributed with one assist.
J.T. Compher had a chance at bronze, but Team USA fell to Russia 7-2. He finished the tournament with one goal and three points in 10 games.
Anton Lindholm and Sweden were eliminated by Canada in the quarterfinals. The defensive prospect saw action in three games, going pointless.
