Congratulations to Maverick Handley, a senior baseball player at Mullen High School, for receiving 657 votes out of a total 1,182 and being named the ASPIRE Athlete of the Week for Week 28!
Maverick is a catcher on the Mustangs baseball team and is carrying a .360 batting average after the first nine games of the season in which the Mustangs are 4-0 in their league. Last season, Maverick batted .483 over 21 games and was selected to the second-team All-State, first-team All-Conference, and the Denver Post first-team All-Colorado. His skills on the baseball field have gained national attention and he has committed to playing at Stanford next season.
“Maverick Handley defines what it takes to be a true student-athlete,” stated Mullen High School baseball coach Vince Porreco. “His discipline and work ethic has provided him the opportunity to be successful in the classroom and on the baseball field. He possess the intangible characteristics to excel in baseball, academics and in life.”
Off the field, Maverick is a model student. He boasts a 4.4 GPA, is a member of National Honor Society, and helps around Mullen as a tutor and New Student Guide. He also gives back to his community by volunteering with the Sports Made Possible program which helps children and adults with mental or physical challenges play baseball in an organized league.
“Maverick is an outstanding baseball player and individual and he will continue his success at the next level with Stanford,” added Coach Porreco.
