Locker room quotes are more often than not filled with clichés and hyperbole. Think Kevin Costner’s advice to Tim Robbins in Bull Durham (NSFW, language). Well, with the Broncos and Packers squaring off on Sunday Night Football this week, the clichés and hyperbole were out in full effect in the Broncos’ locker room.
The hosts of The Big Show on Mile High Sports AM 1340, Kent Erickson, Benny Bash and Bejnamin Allbright, went straight to the source to find out how the Broncos view this historic matchup of 6-0 teams.
For just the fourth time in NFL history and only the second time since 1973, two teams with records of 6-0 or better will square off. And the Broncos and Packers will do it on the biggest stage in regular season football.
While Crash Davis and Nuke LaLoosh might only take them one game at a time, Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak knows this game is a doozy. According to Kubiak, the Broncos have “a tough 10 weeks ahead and none bigger than this one.”
What makes this one so big is the Packers’ strength on both sides of the ball. Not only are they the No. 1 scoring defense (the Broncos are No. 2), they have a top-five offense that’s capable of putting points on the board. That’s an area the Broncos have struggled – at least as far as the standards of quarterback Peyton Manning are concerned.
Manning wouldn’t say how many points he thinks it will take to get a win (Crash would be so proud), but he insinuated that the Broncos will have to improve from their recent production if they’re going to beat the Packers. Green Bay enters Sunday night’s tilt as the No. 5 scoring offense in the league at 27.3 points per game, while the Broncos are more than a field goal behind them at 23.2.
Just how big is this game? Peyton Manning practiced all week – seeing action on Wednesday for the first time all season.
“It speaks to the desire to get [the offense] right,” Allbright said of the move.
But when asked if this week was any different, in terms of preparation for Green Bay, Manning took a different direction than his head coach. The undefeated Packers, with two-time All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers, warranted no different preparation than Josh McCown and the Cleveland Browns, if you believe Manning.
