Through six weeks of the 2015 NFL season one of the common refrains we’ve heard from Peyton Manning and Gary Kubiak about the offense is that “it’s a work in progress.”
The one thing Arran Andersen of KMGH and The Orange and Blue Review on thedenverchannel.com points out is that Manning and Kubiak have yet to say, “We’re close,” when referring to the state of the offense.
Doug Ottewill, editor of Mile High Sports Magazine, donned the Zubaz and joined Andersen and Lionel Bienvenu on Monday and went to bat for Manning. He was quick to remind the guys that Manning was just 10 yard short of 300 on the day and was the victim of multiple drops in critical situations.
That doesn’t excuse the poor decision-making in overtime, or Manning’s inability to find the end zone, says Ottewill, but he believes that other corrections will more than make up for some of Manning’s deficiencies in adapting to the new offense. The Broncos, Ottewill contends, are closer than Manning and Kubiak are letting on, despite the seemingly off stat lines.
Bienvenu acknowledges what a bizarre scenario the Broncos are in, with their Hall of Fame quarterback currently leading the league in interceptions and ranked 33rd in passer rating (in a 32-team league).
