How quickly should the Denver Broncos make Paxton Lynch the starter?

When compared to the rest of the quarterbacks on the Broncos roster, it’s easy to see why Paxton Lynch might be forced into a starting role sooner than expected. He’s a guy who threw 28 touchdowns and just four interceptions during his final year at Memphis, and based on nearly every scouting report, he checks just about every box you’d want from a top-tier quarterback, even if he is a little raw. Not to mention, the Broncos’ most-veteran quarterback, Mark Sanchez, is most well known for the butt fumble.

But does that mean Lynch should be the starter right away?

Former University of Colorado and NFL player Chad Brown joined Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro on the Afternoon Drive to discuss how the Broncos should approach Lynch’s development.

“Even if he’s ready, maybe have Mark Sanchez take that opening week, opening month pressure,” said Brown.

Some of that pressure that Lynch could face includes being a rookie quarterback, having to replace a legend in Peyton Manning and leading the defending Super Bowl champs. It may make sense to let the more-experienced Sanchez take some of that scrutiny, allowing Lynch to come into his own before promoting him to the starting role.

Lynch hasn’t taken snaps under center since his freshman year — a key aspect to leading the Gary Kubiak offense — and while he has the fundamental tools to lead the Broncos, it may take some time before Lynch can run the system.

Denver looks poised to have another top-notch defense, allowing the team to not rely on stellar quarterback play. When considering when to start Paxton Lynch, as Brown put it, it may best to “err on the side of caution.”
