For the first time in team history, the Denver Broncos made the infamous “Mr. Irrelevant” pick – the final pick in the NFL Draft. With pick No. 253, Denver selected Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly – a player with a checkered history.
Kelly is the nephew of former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, but it’s not that relationship that had the Denver media raising their eyebrows with the pick.
The 23-year-old Buffalo native has multiple character concerns on his résumé. He was dismissed from Clemson due to conduct detrimental to the team. Kelly wound up at Mississippi after a 2014 season in which he led East Mississippi to a 12-0 record and victory in the NJCAA National Football Championship. In December 2014, Kelly was arrested following an altercation outside of a Buffalo nightclub in which he got into a fight with bouncers and resisted arrest. He was also involved in a fight at a high school football game in 2016.
Kelly is also coming off an injury that could limit him early in OTAs and camp, according to some reports.
The Broncos previously passed on another prospect with character concerns that had been linked to them, Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon.
With that in mind, Kelly had a productive two years at Ole Miss, passing for 6,800 yards and 50 touchdowns. Kelly has a big arm like his uncle. He also has a pair of outstanding coaches in offensive coordinator Mike McCoy and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave to guide his development at the next level. Kelly did beat Alabama in his college career, no small feat.
After the pick, there were more than a few people chiming in on the pick. Here’s a few of the top tweets from the moments after the Broncos made Kelly their first “Mr. Irrelevant”…
This year's "Mr Irrelevant" actually is very relevant: With the last pick, Broncos make QB Chad Kelly this year's annual "Mr. Irrelevant".

Wow! Chad Kelly. I didn't think Broncos would want that kind of player as QB3.

Kelly also recently had wrist surgery, can't throw for 3 months. Could be a PS/IR guy when it's all said & done.
