“In Colorado, tampering with the property of another with the intent to annoy, inconvenience, or interrupt utility service is criminal tampering,” the Colorado Legal Defense Group states. “Criminal tampering is a class 2 misdemeanor carrying up to 120 days in jail and/or up to $750 in fines.”
Colorado also has unique laws surrounding domestic violence, which is where the domestic violence enhancer comes into play.
“Domestic violence in Colorado is not treated as an independent crime,” the Colorado Legal Defense Group writes. “Rather, [domestic violence] is a sentencing enhancement or aggravator. It increases the punishment for any offense against current or former spouses or dating partners.”
In their explanation of the domestic violence enhancer, the Colorado Legal Defense Group explains that arrests always have to be issued in these cases.
“Colorado is a mandatory arrest state, which means police must arrest anyone they have probable cause to believe committed domestic violence,” the Colorado Legal Defense Group writes. It does not matter if the alleged victims recant or wish not to press charges. And while [domestic violence] charges are pending, defendants will have a protection order taken out against them. ”
In an official statement on the situation, the Denver Broncos said, “We are aware of the matter involving Jerry Jeudy and are in the process of gathering more information.”
Jeudy is set to enter his third season with the Broncos after being selected by the franchise with the 15th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has recorded 1,323 yards and three touchdowns on 90 receptions through his first two seasons in the league.
