With C.J. Anderson being signed to an offer sheet by the Miami Dolphins yesterday, the Denver Broncos may very well be in need of a starting running back. John Elway does have five days to match the Dolphins’ offer, but with his frugal start to free agency, it’s hard to imagine that he’s willing to fork up close to $5 million a year for a starting running back.
If that’s the case, then what’s his backup plan?
According to Mile High Sports Radio’s own Eric Goodman, it could be a two-time Pro Bowler.
One reason why #Broncos might not match #Dolphins offer for CJ Anderson.
Just learned: #Broncos have reached out to UFA RB Alfred Morris
— Eric Goodman (@EricGoodman) March 11, 2016
Morris’ production has fallen off year after year since his outstanding 1,600-yard, 13-touchdown rookie season in 2012, but then again, so has the entire Washington Redskins team. One could make the argument that he could thrive once again in a new system — or an old system, in Morris’ case.
Morris’ best two seasons came under Mike Shanahan’s zone-blocking scheme in Washington, and under Gary Kubiak, Morris would be returning to an offense he knows best.
And if there’s one thing the Broncos would be able to count on, it’s that Morris will be ready to play each and every week; in his four seasons, Morris has started all 64 of the Redskins games, plus two more playoff games.
That kind of accountability is something the Bronco backfield hasn’t seen in quite awhile.
