Denver will only pay Kaepernick $7 million dollars. Kaepernick won’t take a pay cut. The 49ers won’t budge on their end. All of this resistance has left the three parties in a pretty awkward standoff.
Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole joined Gil Whiteley this morning to discuss the reason for such tension.
The situation is beyond complicated, and though the 49ers seem to have put their foot down, there is still underlying division within the organization.
“Some want to keep him, some don’t,” Cole said. “These are powerful people. So, they have conflicts within their own ranks.”
In other words, some of the organization sees his potential given the right coaching staff (Chip Kelly), and others believe he’s more trouble than he’s worth.
How does a team sort out such a complicated situation, especially when the player is someone who doesn’t necessarily want to be wearing scarlet and gold next season?
Well … they don’t.
“I do think that at some point in time, push is going to come to shove and something’s going to get done,” Cole said. “Otherwise they’re going to cut him. And cutting him gets them no money and no draft [pick].”
With any NFL decision, we all know that the almighty dollar plays a heavy role. So the question is: Can the San Francisco 49ers mend relations with their former star quarterback, or will they cut ties, eat the bullet and pay a portion of Kaepernick’s salary just to get him out of the building?
Broncos fans can only hope that John Elway has a plan to end the prolonged standoff and give the Mile High City some peace of mind.
