As the Rockies prepared for their Opening Day tilt against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, shortstop Trevor Story and catcher Chris Iannetta spoke with Les Shapiro of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 in the Chase Field locker room.
The Diamondbacks added a humidor in the offseason after seeing the success that the Rockies have had with theirs. Iannetta — who has caught for both teams in his career, felt that the park didn’t seem slanted toward the pitcher or batter when he’s played there. “I think it’s pretty fair,” he said. “It’s like Coors [Field]; there’s a lot of big gaps. The humidor isn’t going to do anything for big gaps. But you add a little bit of elevation [in Phoenix], it’s dry — the ball will carry a little bit. It’s a good hitter’s park, but I don’t think it’s an awful pitcher’s park; they pitched pretty well last year. We’ll see.”
Story, who made his major-league debut in Chase Field, is fond of the park — even if he is a visitor. “No doubt. This is where I opened up in ’16; there’s a lot of special memories that I have with my family and friends and my teammates. It’s fun to be back here.” Story became only the sixth major-leaguer to hit two home runs in a debut game, and he looked back at it with justifiable pride. “I remember how fun it was,” Story said. “All the hard times it took to get there. For sure, [I was nervous] leading up to the game, but I was more excited. My first at-bat? I was pretty nervous. Once I got that out of the way, I could breathe a little bit; treat it like a regular game. I never dreamed that I would do that — hit two home runs — but it’s obviously one of my favorite memories.”
