It seems lately that every time the Rockies take a step forward with their bullpen, something happens to take a step back. After a successful Rockies debut for All-Star Pat Neshek on Saturday, Colorado temporarily lost one of its most reliable bullpen arms on Sunday morning.
The Rockies announced Sunday that they have placed left-handed pitcher Jake McGee (mid-back strain) on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to July 27. In a corresponding move, Colorado recalled left-handed pitcher Zac Rosscup from Triple-A Albuquerque.
McGee has gone 0-1 with a 3.27 ERA (41.1 IP, 15 ER), 12 walks and 47 strikeouts in 43 appearances with the Rockies this season. He’s held opponents scoreless in 34 of his 43 appearances while limiting them to a .219 batting average. In parts of eight seasons with Tampa Bay (2010-15) and Colorado (2016-17), McGee has gone 23-15 with 42 saves and a 3.09 ERA (346.2 IP, 119 ER), allowing 281 hits, 100 walks and 404 strikeouts in 397 career appearances.
Rosscup has made three appearances with the Rockies this season, allowing one run in 3.2 innings pitched (2.45 ERA) with four hits, no walks and four strikeouts. He has not allowed a run in eight appearances with Triple-A Albuquerque with four hits, no walks and 10 strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched.
Additionally, the Rockies have named right-handed pitcher Carlos Estévez as the 26th man for today’s doubleheader.
