Sonny Dykes on Week 1 matchup with CU Buffs: ‘Should be a heck of a ballgame’

The CU Buffs are set to kick off the Coach Prime era with a nationally televised marquis matchup against the TCU Horned Frogs — a matchup which TCU’s head coach, Sonny Dykes, is already looking forward to.

“I think it’s good for college football,” Dykes said of the Week 1 matchup, during Big 12 Media Days in Dallas. “Obviously, Deion is a big personality and a well-known guy and is good for the game. He puts a lot of eyeballs on the game and he’ll be good for Colorado. It’ll be a contrast of styles. We try to operate a little bit more in the shadows, maybe, and it’s just kind of different personalities, but it should be a heck of a ballgame.”

While Dykes is correct to say that the Buffaloes haven’t been operating in the shadows, the nature of their construction presents massive headaches for whoever they face. There’s no tape out there yet on this team, as almost the whole roster has been overhauled, and the starting lineup is now a patchwork of players from different schools.

That’s been a frustration for Dykes and his staff as they prepare to face the CU Buffs.

“They’re going to have a bunch of good players.” Dykes said. “One thing (Coach Prime’s) done a tremendous job of is attracting players — a lot of really high-quality transfers. They’re going to be hard to evaluate. You’re going to be watching like 60 different teams, trying to figure out who these guys are and what they do.”

None of those transfers project to be as impactful as the CU Buffs’ new starting quarterback — Shedeur Sanders.

“You go back and you look at Shedeur (Sanders), his son, who’s a really good quarterback. It starts there,” Coach Dykes shared. “How are we going to defend him and what we’re going to do? You’ve got to do the best you can to look at their key players. Their depth chart’s going to be evolving, so many different players from so many different programs.”

The Week 1 matchup between these two up-and-coming programs can’t come soon enough.
