The defense has been on an all-world pace, and there has been plenty of talk about what Peyton Manning, Gary Kubiak and the rest of the offense is doing. However, the much forgotten third phase of the game has been a big key to the Broncos’ success.
“One of the biggest reasons, silent reason, why the Broncos have been so successful this season has been the special teams,” Dee White said on Notaro and Big Dee Wednesday evening. “The punting game has been much improved, the kicking game has been much improved and the coverage teams have been much improved.”
The special teams haven’t necessarily been flashy, but they have been consistent. They aren’t making mistakes which have been a problem for the Broncos in recent years. One reason why has been the players contributing to special teams this season.
“You have starters, not just starters but elite cornerbacks that are playing special teams,” Renaud Notaro stated when referring to Aqib Talib’s blocked extra point. “I think the fact that you have starters playing on special teams makes a difference. They are the best players. They are the best athletes.”
