One of the most highly anticipated games in 2024 for Denver Broncos fans, now might not end up being that big of a deal.
During the offseason, the Broncos parted ways with quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson’s two seasons in Denver failed to live up to anyone’s expectations, and honestly, couldn’t have gone worse. Needless to say, the Wilson experiment has left a very sour taste in the mouths of Broncos fans. Wilson would go on to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers for a fraction of what Denver initially signed him to.
In Week 2, the Steelers will come to Denver and face the Broncos. This game will also be Denver’s home opener. A potential revenge game against Wilson and the first home game of the season? Undoubtedly Mile High will be rockin’.
Unfortunately, it’s looking like this exciting scenario won’t end up happening. On Tuesday afternoon, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters that the team is proceeding through the week as if Justin Fields will be their starting quarterback against the Broncos. Wilson has recently been sidelined with a calf injury, and it looks as if he won’t be healed in time for a matchup against his former team.
“As I sit here today, we’re preparing as if Justin is going to be our quarterback,” said Tomlin. “I think that’s the appropriate way to do it. Speculation is a waste of time. Russell’s hurt. He is not available to us. And so, as you guys know, as a general practice, I focus my energy on those that are available and their readiness.”
Tomlin was specifically asked if Wilson would be ready to start Sunday. He wouldn’t give a definitive answer.
“That’s a big if,” said Tomlin. “I’m not into the hypotheticals. As I mentioned, right now, he’s not healthy. And so my time and attention is focusing on the readiness of Justin.”
The #Steelers are planning to start QB Justin Fields on Sunday once again, coach Mike Tomlin just told reporters.

What a potential Russell Wilson absence means for the Broncos
While the possibility of a revenge game was certainly exciting, it shouldn’t change anything for the Broncos. This will be the home opener for the Broncos, so they’ll initially have that energy advantage on their side. The Broncos should also really strive to win this game to avoid falling to 0-2 on the season.
The Broncos will now be facing Fields at quarterback, who somewhat resembles a similar play style to Wilson when he was at his peak. Against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1, Fields had a pretty mediocre showing. He went 17 for 23 for 156 yards and zero touchdowns. He also rushed 14 times for 57 yards but had one fumble. Fields is not afraid to use his legs to extend plays, so the Broncos defensive line will have to step up and contain him. Against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1, the Broncos defensive line was one of the few bright spots, generating consistent pressure.
In terms of the Broncos’ offense, the offensive line will have to try their best to minimize the damage done by TJ Watt. Against the Falcons, Watt wreaked havoc and helped seal the victory for the Steelers.
Broncos wide receivers really struggled to get separation against a smothering Seahawks defense. To make matters worse, the run game couldn’t get going as well. So at times, Nix was forced to do more than he needed to, and it ended poorly.
If the offensive line can keep Nix upright, and the wide receivers and running backs do their part and help their rookie quarterback, the Broncos could get their first win of the season.
