Tyler Anderson‘s return from the disabled list had a short shelf life, and a struggling slugger is headed to the shelf himself.
The Rockies announced today that they have placed Anderson (left knee inflammation) and Carlos Gonzalez (right shoulder strain) on the 10-day disabled list.
Anderson made two appearances since returning from the 10-day DL last week. He pitched one inning of relief in a loss to the Diamondbacks last week, then was unable to pitch past the fourth inning on Sunday in his first start since returning. In 13 appearances, 12 starts, this season, Anderson is 3-5 with a 6.11 ERA (63.1 IP, 43 ER), 23 walks and 63 strikeouts.
In corresponding moves, Colorado recalled right-handed pitcher Jairo Diaz from Triple-A Albuquerque and reinstated right-hander Chad Qualls from the 10-day disabled list (lower back spasms).
Diaz will be making his first appearance with the Rockies since 2015. He missed the entire 2016 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Diaz began the 2017 season on the 10-day disabled list prior to being reinstated and optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on April 29. In 10 appearances between High-A Lancaster and Albuquerque this year, Diaz went 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA (9.2 IP, 5 ER), two walks and 12 strikeouts. In his first season with the Rockies, 2015, he went 0-1 with a 2.37 ERA (19.0 IP, 5 ER), six walks and 18 strikeouts in 21 appearances.
Gonzalez will be making his first appearance on the disabled list since 2014. In 68 games this season, he is batting .221 with 13 doubles, six home runs, 20 RBI, 29 walks and one stolen base.
