It was a big week for the Denver Broncos as they signed linebacker Brandon Marshall for another four years. The 26 year old’s extension is worth $32 million with $20 million in guarantees. This extension also included a $10 million signing bonus.
With such a big deal on the table, it may affect Von Miller‘s future contract with the Broncos. Chad Brown, former linebacker, joined Eric Goodman and Les Shapiro on the Afternoon Drive to explain what he thinks.
“The timing of these things are never accidental,” said Brown. “The timing of them trying to publicly shame Von to sign his deal by throwing out a $114 million. The timing of this Brandon Marshall thing is another attempt to get Von to go back to the table and say, ‘Oh my goodness all the money is disappearing.’”
Miller has been playing for the Broncos since 2011 and was drafted second overall. He is now the third-fasted player in the NFL history to reach 50 sacks.
“If I was Von Miller I would be sticking to my guns,” said Brown. “This is a guy who won the Super Bowl and the championship game for the Denver Broncos. For him to take less than his market value, as we just saw with the Fletcher Cox deal, is absurd.”
For Miller, it’s about security. If the Broncos aren’t willing to give him the guaranteed money he’s looking for, they’re essentially telling him that they aren’t willing to commit to him fully for more than two years, even when a team like the Eagles is willing to do that and more with a guy like Cox.
Brown claimed that they will be able to get the deal together; it just might be set up differently.
“Von Miller was the second pick in the draft, and he has plenty of money,” said Brown. “As long as the money is fully guarantee and he doesn’t have to receive it the day of signing, they can give him $15 or $20 million this year and then give him bigger payments down the road. Again as long as it is fully guaranteed I don’t think Von Miller is going to mind so much.”
