For every superhero, there is their kryptonite — a weakness that can’t be defended against.
One of those rare weaknesses for the defending champion New England Patriots — who will compete in their 10th Super Bowl on Sunday — happens to be the Denver Broncos. Despite finishing 5-11 last year, Christopher Price from the Boston Sports Journal, in an interview with Sean Walsh of Mile High Sports AM 1340 | FM 104.7 says that the Patriots remain uncomfortable facing Denver.
“I will say this: Trips to Denver have always been considered a little dicey for this franchise, historically,” Price explained, singling out the Broncos as a tough matchup for the Patriots.
“Things have a way of falling apart out there; I think the Patriots always approach trips to Denver with a certain measure of caution. There was some familiarity with, ‘Oh boy, going to Denver again,’ even though they had handled them the last couple of times.”
New England defeated the Broncos handily in 2017, 41-16 in Week 10. The Patriots are 3-3 in their last six meetings with Denver and 0-2 in the playoffs in that time.
Price says that while Patriots’ confidence is sky-high in Minneapolis, there is never a temptation to overlook opponents. So, New England continues to go above and beyond for their preparation as they face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII.
“This is a confident team and a relatively confident fan base, but that doesn’t mean they don’t approach every single game with a certain sense of, ‘we cannot overlook these guys, we can’t just roll footballs out there because we’re the Patriots. We have to go above and beyond when it comes to preparation.’”
