The Denver Broncos have representation in the 2024 NFL Pro Bowl Games this season. It was announced on Wednesday night that Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II, rookie receiver/returner Marvin Mims, and veteran safety Justin Simmons were selected as starters.
Denver Broncos have three players in NFL Pro Bowl Games
Despite missing out on the playoffs, several key members of the Broncos roster are being recognized for their play and impact this season with nominations to the 2024 NFL Pro Bowl Games.
Simmons and Surtain were selected for the second time of their careers, while Mims was selected in his first season. The NFL also announced that offensive guard Quinn Meinerz and fullback Mike Burton will be alternates for the event and could step in if somebody withdraws or pulls out.
Surtain has been impactful this season as a lockdown cornerback. This past Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers, he shadowed Chargers WR Quinten Johnston on 32 of 34 total routes in Week 17 (94.1%), including 16 in press coverage (50%). Surtain allowed just two catches for 20 yards on four targets to Johnston, with two tight windows, according to NFL Next Gen Stats.
The third-year Broncos cornerback has started and appeared in all 16 games for Denver this season and has 11 passes defended and a career-high 63 tackles. He could follow up his 2022 season not only with another Pro Bowl selection but should be in consideration for another All-Pro honor.
Despite missing some games due to injury early in the season, Simmons easily established himself as one of the Broncos’ most valuable defensive players at his position. He’s appeared in 14 games this season, accumulating 67 tackles, eight passes defended, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Mims didn’t have the best 2023 season from a receiving standpoint, mainly due to him being misutilized and hardly targeted offensively, but he made his impact felt in the return game for Denver this season.
The speedy rookie return artist leads the NFL with 17.4 yards per punt return, with a career-long 52-yard return this season. In the kick return game, Mims has been explosive when allowed to field the ball.
He’s averaged 26.3 yards per kick return, including a 99-yard return touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in Week 3. Between returning, rushing, and receiving, Mims has surpassed over 1011 all-purpose yards this year, which is well deserving of a Pro Bowl nod.
