A central reason for the Rockies’ cause for optimism ahead of the 2017 season is returning to the roster. Although Tyler Anderson‘s year hasn’t gone as hoped up to this point, he’ll have a chance to contribute late in the season.
Colorado Rockies announced Friday that they reinstated Anderson from the 60-day disabled list and recalled right-handed pitcher Jairo Diaz from Triple-A Albuquerque; Diaz was then placed on the 60-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation.
Anderson has gone 3-5 with a 6.11 ERA (63.1 IP, 43 ER), 23 walks and 63 strikeouts in 13 appearances, 12 starts with the Rockies this season.
He made his last appearance on June 25 in a start at Dodger Stadium before being removed in the third inning with left knee inflammation. Anderson was placed on the 10-day disabled list the following day and transferred to the 60-day disabled list on July 26.
In 2015, Anderson posed the best ERA among Rockies starters with at least 10 starts. He was 5-6 in 19 starts, and his 1.286 WHIP was second among that same group behind Jon Gray.
The left-hander made three rehab appearances with Albuquerque starting on Aug. 27 and went 0-2 with a 6.14 ERA (7.1 IP, 5 ER), three walks and seven strikeouts.
Diaz went 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA (5.0 IP, 5 ER), five walks and two strikeouts in four appearances across two stints with Colorado this season. In 30 career appearances across parts of three seasons with Los Angeles-AL (2014) and Colorado (2015-17), he has gone 0-1 with a 3.64 ERA (29.2 IP, 12 ER), 14 walks and 28 strikeouts.
With 20 games left in the season, Colorado entered Sunday’s finale with a chance to sweep the Dodgers and a three-game lead over Milwaukee and St. Louis for the final Wild Card spot.
