Emotions at Sports Authority Field at Mile High went from an extreme high to an extreme low in a matter of seconds on Sunday.
First, Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby intercepted Philip Rivers for a 51-yard touchdown to give the Broncos a 10-7 lead in the second quarter.
But on the play Chargers running back Melvin Gordon collided with Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, sending the 69-year-old crashing to the ground.
Phillips stayed on the ground and had to be removed from the field on a stretcher, although he appeared to be moving his fingers with his eyes open.
He was immediately taken to a hospital, per CBS Sports.
UPDATE: Phillips out of hospital, will return to Broncos on Monday
It was a scary moment for a team who were without their head coach, Gary Kubiak, the last time they faced San Diego. Kubiak took the game off after being hospitalized five days prior with a complex migraine.
Here’s what Twitter was saying as Phillips was being attended to on the Denver sideline.

Thoughts and prayers with Wade Phillips. Never want to see someone go down on the sidelines like he did.

Probably not great for a 70-year-old man to get hit head on by a football player going full-speed.
