Say what you want about Team North America’s inclusion in the World Cup of Hockey, but the youngsters certainly have a flair for the dramatic.
On Wednesday, the U-23 team faced off against Sweden. They quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead over Tre Kroner, then went up 3-1. Dictating play throughout the first two frames, they allowed Sweden back into the contest in the third. Sweden tied the game, sending it into overtime.
In the extra frame, the action was back-and-fourth. Then, in a split second, the contest was over.
Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon found himself all alone with all-world goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. It was Team North America’s sixth registered breakaway of the contest, and it was one to remember.
MacKinnon tried two dekes. Lundqvist didn’t bite, so the 21-year old curled the puck to his backhand and roofed it into the net. North America had defeated the mighty Swedes 4-3, writing another chapter in their shocking Cinderella story.

Unfortunately, despite the victory, it might have been the final chapter in North America’s story during this World Cup. They needed to win in regulation to advance to the semifinals. Now, they will have to watch Finland and Russia’s matchup on Thursday afternoon with bated breath. Unless Finland wins in regulation, Russia will advance and Team North America will go home.
