The team’s continued development on the defensive end and the way they close out games will be key parts of the season if the Denver Nuggets truly want to make the playoffs. They showcased that in their 108-96 victory over the visiting Sacramento Kings on Monday night.
Before the game, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone said it was just another game, but let’s be honest, it was one not only what the Nuggets needed, as they hold on for dear life to the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference Playoffs race, but one he REALLY, REALLY wanted; as it just so happens to be his former team, the team that fired him and one he hasn’t beat since he took over for the Denver Nuggets.
“On a very small scale to finally get a win against that team, it’s kind of nice,” Malone said after the game.
If the game Monday night is an indication of what’s to come to finish the season, the fans of Denver have things to look forward to come playoff time, the element of surprise.
Without Jokic changes needed to be made, they had to implement a whole new starting line-up and game plan, as he has been pivotal to their success; but they made the needed adjustments needed for their first win against the Kings this year and what’s even more shocking is they only allowed 96 points; progression.
Wilson Chandler, who has played well in the starting lineup for the injured Kenneth Faried, looked aggressive all night as he had a hot first quarter, scoring 16 points. He stayed that way all night, finishing with a career-high of 36 points.
“Our defense was a lot better this time than the last time we played them,” said Chandler. “I think we’re taking pride in our 1-on-1 defense and getting better there. “
Danilo Gallinari also added 18 points, six rebounds and two assists. Gary Harris finished with 15.
For the first time since 2011-2012, the Nuggets find themselves involved in the playoff race this late in the season; and they control their own destiny. It’s simple; win as many games as possible before the end of the season and you’re in.
