For the first time since 1998, the Colorado Buffaloes are 4-0.
The Buffs bulldozed the Bruins of UCLA in a 38-16 blowout on Friday night in Boulder. The black and gold are for real, no doubt about that.
CU struggled on offense in the first half, trailing for most of the first two quarters until finally taking the 14-13 lead into the break. The second half, though, was basically all Buffs as their offense and defense each caught stride; Colorado scored on four straight drives for 24 straight points to end the game with the victory. All that scoring happened while the Buffs defense simultaneously forced four straight punts.
It was complete domination by the home team in the second half, and the Buffs stars really showed out in this huge win.
Steven Montez was nearly perfect passing the ball against the Bruins defense, going 22-26 for 237 yards and one touchdown, also running for two touchdowns, racking up 81 yards on the ground, with a 7.4 yard per carry average.
That throwing score went to Laviska Shenault, for 57 yards. Shenault racked up a career-high with 12 receptions for 126 yards, and he also ran one score. And starting running back Travon McMillian surpassed the century mark, running for 102 yards on 21 carries, a 4.9 YPC, with a touchdown scamper of his own.
Dorian Thompson-Robinson went 17-35 passing for 138 yards and one touchdown passing for UCLA, leaving much to be desired from the quarterback position. Joshua Kelly ran 12 times for 124 yards (10.3 YPC) while Nate Landman led CU with nine total tackles and Drew Lewis enjoyed two sacks and three tackles for a loss.
It should be noted, the Buffs’ first four opponents — Colorado State, Nebraska and New Hampshire — are a combined 1-14. Still, earning wins in the FCS don’t come easy, no matter the competition. And the Buffaloes are gaining confidence as this season moves forward.
Next up, Colorado faces 2-2 Arizona State again at Folsom Field at 2 p.m. on Oct. 6. Oregon State and Arizona State face off tomorrow at 8 p.m. and no matter the outcome, the Sun Devils will be the best competition the Buffs have faced this season.
