It has been a difficult stretch of baseball for the Colorado Rockies, and if you have been watching this team lately, you know exactly how heavy their bats look right now. The Rockies are desperately searching for traction as they head into the desert to face a division rival. They have dropped seven of their last ten contests and have managed only six wins over their last 20 games, but they’ll try to find some footing tonight, with first pitch scheduled for 7:40 p.m. MT.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks are moving in the exact opposite direction. While Colorado continues to stumble out of the gate, Arizona is finding its rhythm. The Diamondbacks have won four of their last five games and seven of their last ten, pushing their overall record a couple of games above the break-even mark. After playing .500 ball for a good stretch of the season, this recent surge suggests that the D-Backs are finally figuring out their identity. That’s bad news for a reeling Rockies club.

Colorado has to find a way to slow down a confident Arizona squad in their own park, while snapping out of a prolonged offensive rut on the road. The Rockies need a clean, mistake-free defensive game and a steady start from their rotation to keep the score manageable in the early innings. Otherwise, this one could get out of reach in a hurry.

The Breakdown

Tonight’s matchup on the mound features Zach Agnos, who will start for the Rockies opposite veteran Eduardo Rodriguez for the Diamondbacks. Across his 25.1 innings this season, Agnos holds a 4.62 ERA, but he’s actually done a decent job keeping traffic off the basepaths, logging a tidy 1.11 WHIP and holding opposing batters to a .217 average. However, it’s going to be hard for Agnos to outduel Rodriguez. Across his 53.1 innings of work on the year, the Arizona starter boasts an impressive 2.53 ERA. While Rodriguez’s 1.26 WHIP and 3.71 walks per nine innings indicate he occasionally issues free passes, he has been exceptional at limiting the damage this season. He also keeps the ball in the park, surrendering only just 0.68 home runs per nine innings and holding hitters to a .224 average, making it difficult for opposing lineups to piece together crooked numbers.

The true X-factor tonight will be whether Colorado’s lineup can capitalize on those occasional walks from Rodriguez. It has been a miserable stretch offensively for the Rockies, who are averaging a paltry 3.50 runs per game with a sluggish .572 OPS over their last 10 contests. Compare that to the Diamondbacks, who have been putting up 5.70 runs per game and a robust .783 OPS over that same 10-game span. If the Rockies intend to keep pace with Arizona’s now-humming lineup, they must string together competitive at-bats and make Rodriguez pay when he misses the zone.

Agnos needs to keep the ball in the yard, command the strike zone, and pitch deep enough to hand a manageable game over to the bullpen. On the other side, the Rockies’ lineup must break out of its recent funk and generate early run support. If they can put pressure on Rodriguez in the first few frames and Agnos finds a steady rhythm, Colorado has a shot to steal a much-needed win on the road.

Odds & Lines

Our Pick

It is difficult to find a logical reason to back Colorado tonight. The Rockies are spiraling, struggling to produce at the plate, and now they face a locked-in Eduardo Rodriguez. While taking a heavy home favorite on the moneyline offers very little value for a bettor, looking at the run market paints a much more appealing picture.

Arizona’s offense is firing on all cylinders right now, and if they can jump on Zach Agnos early, this game could go sideways very quickly for the Rockies. Even if the Colorado starter manages to navigate the first few frames unscathed, he will eventually have to hand the ball over to a bullpen that carries a shaky 4.38 ERA on the season. That’s a recipe for a late-game collapse against a Diamondbacks lineup that is currently finding gaps with ease. Arizona’s own bullpen, sporting a slightly better 4.17 ERA, is reliable enough to protect a lead once their offense does the heavy lifting. Don’t overthink this – the matchup and the momentum completely favor the hot D-Backs.

Pick: Arizona Diamondbacks -1.5 (-107)

Player Prop Pick

While the Rockies have struggled to produce as a collective unit, diving into the player prop markets reveals a few solid individual candidates. Ezequiel Tovar (0.900 hits per game) is finally making consistent contact, but the cleanest edge tonight belongs to – who else? – TJ Rumfield.

Though the Rockies themselves have been struggling, Rumfield hasn’t; hitting .294 over his last 10 games while posting a healthy .856 OPS. Even though Arizona’s Eduardo Rodriguez presents a challenging matchup for the Rockies overall, Rumfield’s patient approach – evidenced by his strong .415 on-base percentage – makes him a tough out. At a modest line, backing him to once again record a single base hit is the most reliable Rockies angle on the board. There’s a reason we’ve been backing Rumfield regularly oif late – he’s seeing the ball well and making consistent contact regardless of the game script, making this a logical Rockies play for tonight.

Pick: TJ Rumfield Over 0.5 Hits
